As a ski racer I was always quite furious when they would say 'well you are only a sportsman' and 'sportsmen don't think'. So I was fighting this labeling from the very beginning. Sport was a big way to learn because you learn how to loose.

My most famous sports achievement or non-achievement was in the Olympic in Squaw Valley where I was leading by a second and I had to just basically come down and I fell, and it was a disaster. It is typical of sport, one moment you are champion and the next you are nothing and to be able to deal with that is a great lesson.

The big problem is in the watch making business is that most of the watches come on the market as a two handed watch and then people try to put things on top of it, a calendar, a perpetual calendar, moon face or a power indicator. These movements are not designed for that.

What we are looking at is the product of something like 800 skilled man-hours. We start with barrel making, with forged drilled tubes, hand striking those to get the shape.Then you have the action filer. You have the lock maker. You have the ejectors in here and the triggers and the furniture here.

You then have got the woodwork of the stocking from seasoned walnut. Taking a pile of bits from all these different trades, and putting it together as a homogeneous whole and making it work is without exaggeration, an accumulation of hundreds of years of knowledge and skill, which has been passed down from master to pupil.

I know the exact direction to take and what I have to do and I can design with my mind. This talent is extremely useful for antique watch restoration because when you see a movement, many of the parts are lost .You have to reinvent the missing parts, the mechanism and have parts made to the same specification as the original. For me the music must be made in the original place - historic original place. Because my music is classical music, including opera and baroque. When the composer wrote the music, he wrote the musical score thinking of that particular venue. In the original place of composition, and sometimes playing original instruments, the musician really feels the inspiration of the music which directly affects the sound. For example when I recorded Salieri's Passion of Jesus Christ, I recorded it at the 'Minorita' Church in Vienna which is the Church that inspired Salieri - the original place where the music was first played.

Because of my family history people know us they, have something unqiue and special they will call us and say, hey you know I've got something special I would like you to see it. So we will go and see it or they will bring it to us. O.k. we say we have, 1, 2, 3 clients who we really think this would just knock their socks off and they would have to have it.
