The Fashion Folk S01 ep3 : Anna Masotti, La Perla Lingere, [Milian]
Interview with Anna Masotti
I have to show myself, because people want to see a face, want to see who is behind the collection. I think that this is good, because I am also a curious person. I want to see who is the creator of something I like very much. I like painting, I like sculpture. If I like something I want to ask this person why did you do this painting for example, because I want to understand you. For me it is not enough just to see something. I want to listen to a point of view. I like to speak with people I don’t like the communication in one direction. For me it is important at this time. People don't talk - they need to talk.
La Perla means sensuality, a brand, which makes a woman very beautiful.
KM – In actuality you make frilly knickers!
La Perla was born in 1954. My grandmother started with her husband in a very
little company of about 5 people.
KM – And they were making Lingerie?
Yes, lingerie, bustier and corsettery.
For my grandmother, the passion was a technical passion. My father with my
mother brings La Perla in a fashion way so they added for the first time, the
concept of colour in the lingerie for example.
KM – How do you make lingerie sexy? I mean what is the ingredient?
You have firstly to know the new technical, the new materials…
KM – Because I gather it has to have support….
Absolutely, this is the first thing and after you have to create something new,
because you know you have to transmit a dream to a women.
My father always says, that with Lingerie you have to be sensual but not
For me there is a line, you have to stay before this line, you don't have to show
If you have a bra that pushes too much ,that is transparent ,that has the wrong
colour - these things together can create something
KM – ugliness
That is vulgar. That is not something refined; you have to suggest something,
not to show something completely.
If we show too much it is an obvious
KM – A sexual show
Yes, a sexual show. We have to show a little bit, yet in a certain way
sometimes we also have to cover because you can show sensuality with a
dress that covers you from head to toe
If you know the body of woman, it is simple it is more simple to create pret-a-
KM – Yes
If you don't know the body and the shape of the woman in this technical way of
lingerie it is very difficult to go from the pret-a-porter to create lingerie.
In the beginning I remember discussing design with my father, "I want to do a
bra with a lot of plumes with a lot of crazy things".
KM – So you had this in an idea?
Yeah, at the beginning buy my father replied, "But you have to pay attention to
what the women want. We have to listen to what the people want and then
after we can add our creativity, But first you have to really listen."
KM – Does it worry you that you have to be in front of the public so much?
I have to show myself, because people want to see a face, want to see who
KM – They want to know the soul of your collection!
….behind the collection. I think that this is good, because I am also a curious
person. I want to see who is the creator of something I like very much . I like
painting, I like sculpture. If I see something that I like I want to see who it is
KM – Why do you want to see?
Because if I like something I want to meet the person, I want to have a
relationship, I want to ask this person why did you do this painting for example,
because I want to understand you. For me it is not enough just to see
something. I want to listen to a point of view. I like to speak with people I don’t
like the communication in one direction. For me it is important at this time.
People sometimes don't talk. - They need to talk.
KM – Who intellectually makes you think "Wow"?
KM – Really?
Yes because my father he lives in a cultural world - he loves very much
everything, from reading books to ….
KM – So he is very intellectual
KM – What is the reason for his intellectuality?
Because he loves and wants to know everything. He is really curious. He is
one of the most curious persons I know my father and this is important,
because it is the premise that makes you young.
KM – Yes, because it keeps you questioning.
All the time, like a baby, you know.
KM – Yes
You have 60 years old but you are like a baby - why?, why?,why?, really like a
baby. This is important because sometimes you meet intellectual people who
are not curious. They live in a world that is only this kind of world and my
father wants to know about everything - this type of work and for other types of
work. He created a very big company but he is still a normal and very simple
KM – Do men really have this demented mentality that they look at women
when it comes to lingerie as a sex object - like the Barbarella thing of the 70's?
Absolutely because also we saw a lot of magazines that the men bought and
buy - you know Playboy and they show these beautiful models, because they
are really beautiful women, in this very, very, cute, sometimes and also in a
very strong way. So they present these two kind of lingerie - cute with a lot of
KM – Frou frou
Frou frou and in another way very, very strong. Ands so, in the mentality of a
man there is this concept of lingerie. Because they like also to see the women
in this strong lingerie.
KM – They want to see them as Playboy bunnies?
Yes, yes, because they want the opposite. If you a see a woman everyday in a
normal way, they want to buy something for the night to see the women in a
completely different way.
A few weeks ago Nicole Kidman visited our London Store. She wears lingerie
in many of her films and videos.
KM – Yes.
After Moulin Rouge, our shops were full of customers that wanted corsets and
KM – Yeah but do you still make corsets?
KM – Are you serious?
KM – Do people still wear that?
A lot of people because people like Nicole Kidman, like Madonna, inspire
normal people to wear what stars and fashion people do.
KM – All the crazy ideas…
Yes, crazy ideas and this is fun.
