The Fashion Folk S01 ep7 : Daniel Tribouillard, Leonard Fashion, [Paris]

Interview with Daniel Tribouillard

I am totally crazy in the creation, and very serious in the management. I work each morning in the areas of business, finance and administration. We have everyday a good lunch, I need the lunch to cut the day because the morning is taken up with the accounting, the lawyers, and in the afternoon I work at the studio with my girls, my models, and my people of the workroom, and I create the garments in the afternoon. Everyday is like that.

Leonard is an International Group of Courture and Perfume and accessories
based on the same concept of the flowers on the silk. This is the new
campaign that we are doing next week in Paris and it is the same image - I
could have done that at the beginning of 1958.
12.48
KM: But when you joined Leonard in 1958 with Mon. Jacque Leonard where
did you come from?

12.55
I was full of ideas, but I had no money to start my own operation, so Mon.
Leonard was being very very risky because he hired a very young man without
any courture background, and he gave me the chance to build a company for
him. After 30 years in 1986 I bought the group.

13.27
I am totally crazy in the creation, and very serious in the management. I work
each morning in the areas of business, finance and administration. We have
everyday a good lunch, I need the lunch to cut the day because the morning is
taken up with the accounting, the lawyers, and in the afternoon I work at the
studio with my girls, my models, and my people of the workroom, and I create
the garments in the afternoon - everyday is like that. My brain is totally cut it
two parts.

14.12
Yesterday I was at the Museum of Textiles, why? After 40 years I have my
designer, my people, I have 5,000 patterns here ready to be printed in the
future, but yesterday I was there, because I needed inspiration for something
new for the five years COMING and I found it, why? Because I don't know
how to do many things, but I do know how to do that!

Nothing is bought outside of the company, we do everything in house. La
Cuisine effet a la maison!

14.54
KM: How does it start?

14.55
You know at the beginning I was crazy I told you and I started with my flowers
and it worked. The people try to find the water in the field with the waterfinders,
they do not study to do this, they take the sticks and they find the water. You
can translate the same for me, I print the garment, I print the piece goods, I
design the piece goods, I show it to Tokyo, New York or Paris, they buy it.

15.39
I always say my company is built on two points, business and art. Business,
because we run the company to sell. I do not create like Picasso, I create to
sell my garments and so what do I need. I need the idea, I need a team of
people to work with me, to design my flowers, to translate my colours, I need
that. Now I am taking care of the perfume, I need the best nose in the world to
try to translate my request - I am always requesting something.

16.20
KM: But this is creation!

16.22
This is creation, and art is the way to design the Leonard pattern. That is art,
this is art. This is a Leonard pattern. It is art and what will I do with this art, I
will do business.

16.37
KM: Is it the same as taking a Picasso painting and making it into a print? Is
this the same concept.

Jewellery Theatre Carravaggio

16.43
Absolutely.

16.50
On this one I hired a Russian painter, to work with me to make that and after
that I print by piece good and I made the garments with that. This is typically
art - we have two solutions, one to use it to do piece good or to sell it in a
gallery.

17.15
I have never bought a printed piece of material, never in my life, I make
everything.

17.21
KM: So you print yourself, you have a factory that prints?

17.25
No, no. We make the patterns, Have you seen the building here with the
designers on the first floor doing 100,000 flowers a year - o.k. we design
everything here and after that we give that to the screen maker in Leon, and
we give it to a printer and this printer may be Hermes, Leonard or other
designers. The printer is very important because it translates what we want but
the beginning of creation in our kind of business, is the pattern, the painting -
you can call it painting, pattern or design. It is the same thing, it is the painting.
I work with very good painters sometimes, because I explain to them what I
like and they translate it.

KM: Who are the painters you have worked with?

18.22
Mrs. Van Hoff she is a fantastic painter and she works for me exclusively - she
is an artists for herself and she paints the flowers for me. I have spent a good
part of my life with her, because I explain, ....I come back, the Queen of
Thailand, she gave me some months ago she gave me the right to use the
Ciricid Orchid. She said I am very pleased, we are very famous in Thailand,
o.k. and I called my painter and said I have the right to use a beautiful white
and yellow orchid with..... when I came back from Thailand, she had already
begun to work on the orchid, without having seen it, and with only the ideas I
have given her over the phone.

19.24
KM: How do you take a piece of art and sculpt it into fashion?

19.28
I work at the studio and workroom with a team of people and they are
specialists in fashion. I did not study fashion, they have studied and they know
how to cut, how to make a pattern, and I give them my piece good and
together we make the garments. Young people, young blood, and strong stuff.

19.54
KM: And this crazy guy called Mon Tribouillard.

19.55
That’s it.
