The Royal Jewellers S01 ep3 : Christian Dior Jewellery [Paris]

Interview with Victoire de Castellane

2.59
Coco Chanel was a fantastic woman but when she died the house was
sleeping and when Karl [Lagerfeld] arrived, he put so much fun, so much modernity that
every young girl wanted to have the Chanel look. Now Dior is getting the best
years and I am very happy because I'm part of that too.

Victoire de Castellane

When I was four I was obsessed by the jewellery. My Grandmother was
always wearing clothes with fine jewellery and precious stones and for me to
like have a dream. So I was completely, well inspired by her and I grew up with
the image of my grandmother with all the jewellery and change it twice a day –
Jewellery for the night, jewellery for the day – With different clothes and
colours, emerald when she was in green, turquoise when she was in blue. It
was, for a little girl, really fantastic!

11.22
The Godmother of my father was Barbara Hutton.

11.24
KM
Barbara Hutton?

11.25
Yes

11.26
KM
From the old Woolworth’s heiress?

11.28
Yes. She was very close to my Grandmother. Barbara Hutton gave to my
mother beautiful Jewellery.

Christian Dior Jewellery

11.34
KM
Yes.

11.35
And when I was five, I saw this Jewellery and I cut.

11.39
KM
Your Kidding?

11.40
I take it to my mother- She didn’t see that- and then I start to change it to
transform it. Why she suddenly saw because I left it on the..

11.51
KM
On the floor?

11.52
Yes – All the gold because..

11.54
KM
Too much

11.55
She said ‘What’s happening with my Jewellery?’ and I say very naturally ‘Oh
well I am doing something better’.

Christian Dior Jewellery

12.06
I grew up in this world and then when I was 18 I start to work at Chanel with Karl Lagerfeld.
I had an uncle who was an assistant of Karl. He was working for Karl but in
other houses – Not for Chanel.
When Karl [Lagerfeld] saw me he was amused by my looks and he said to me ‘why don’t
you come and stay with us at the studio of Chanel’. And so I was very excited
and say yes and he said to me ‘ Well we can tell you love Jewellery so take
care of the Jewellery’. And so then, I start to create all the costume Jewellery
For Chanel since Fourteen years.

12.47
KM
So this was the costume Jewellery?

12.48
Exactly

12.49
For Fourteen Years?

12.50
Exactly.

Christian Dior Jewellery

12.56
KM
What was the concept?

12.57
It was used to create Thousands and Thousands costume Jewellery for every
fashion Show.

13.02
KM
You had to look at the collection and then accessorise it or be totally
different

13.08
Both. In my case, I see before Karl make the design – And then when
I saw the dresses I say oh yes this can be good I have to create Jewellery like
this – So it was both.

Christian Dior Jewellery

13.32
KM
What is Jewellery?

13.33
It’s very symbolic. It’s a gift or it can be transmitted by generation to
generation. And it’s something very precious, so I think there is aahh…
????

13.50
KM
How do you compare Jewellery with the Cotoire??

13.52
Its totally different but what I like in the Cotoire House is the Spirit- That’s why
I made for the real Jewellery and Cotoire Spirit. It means that Identities of
Cotoire inspire me like bow, ribbon, lace, corset, feather. Real Jewellery.

14.17
KM
So fourteen years – Every new collection had to be better than the last one?

14.21
Exactly

14.22
KM
How did you deal with that?

14.24
Well I am doing this..like..here…I know that every collection has to be better. I
think I have to like what I do, and then it’s ok.

14.41
Threes years ago now I just met ?? He is a man that is very ?? He helps the
creator. He has a lot of respect for creator and I think that’s very important.

14.55
KM
He will let you do your own thing?

14.56
Completely. He lets..Very important for me, he lets me, what we say
“….?????”
Means that I can do what I want.

15.06
KM
So you’ve come from Chanel – You are doing costume Jewellery- Dreaming
about doing serious Jewellery, in comes ?? says ‘ Please do this here it is just
do it.

15.20
KM
What did you think to do first? What was your strategy?

15.23
I start with the spirit of Cotoire because for me it was very important to make
the identity of Dior and also because I think that Jewellery was missing
sensuality and femininity sprit in jewellery something more ... you know without
the real spirit.

15.51
I love the jewellery while moving, I love extra item jewellery but also I love tiny
things. I think a women are wearing jewellery so I’m a women, I know that
what we like its something very close to you, with moving well with nothing
hurting you, not stiff, something very subtle, you know.

16.15
KM
What is the relationship between a women and a jewel though? It’s different to
a woman with a dress.

16.21
KM
What is the difference?

16.21
Well of course a dress you can wear it 10 and then it becomes old fashion so
that you don’t like it.

16.30
KM
Well, Yes.

16.31
I think Jewellery is different because of course Jewellery has a big value and
the stones is something that you wearing really on your skin. You think that if
you have a daughter you’re going to give to your daughter, its something very
close to you

16.47
KM
Very personal.

16.48
Exactly. Or so of course because its also a gift.

16.56
I’m working only with ?? Who are in Paris. ?? Actually from father to son.

17.03
KM: Yes

17.04
And they are very old ?? and they know exactly how to make these things…

17.07
KM: The technique

17.08
Exactly. How to make things not with Calico because I hate that idea and
completely ??

17.14
KM
So you work with the…so this is you…..

17.17
I’m for the ….everything...because I don’t want to look at the end, its not
working, its finished..no no no..I’m following every step of the fabrication

17.32
You know now I think that Jewellery is not seen like an investment. Of course
women work and the say ‘I want to buy jewellery as I can buy my bag or my
shoes so they come and say I’m going to have a pleasure for me. I want to
buy this ring and to wear it every day waiting for their husband.
