The Royal Jewellers S01 ep9 : Maria Gaspari Jewellery [Valenza]
Interview with Odile & Maria Gaspari
I was always in love with the jewelry, since I was a baby. When I was a baby my mother used to put me in the office behind us, with a bag and I used to sleep there. When I was 7 years old I went to Moussaieff in London and Schlomo had two sapphires in his hand and asked me which sapphire was from Kashmir. I looked at them and said this one is Kashmir. He told my mother, "I can’t believe it, how can she say that this is Kashmir?", because I was only 7 years old.
We are from an old jewellery family originally from the South of Italy. We are
Countessa, Casavola, it is my grandmother’s family name.
Since my grandmother is a lady, she cannot have the shops because in the
Italian tradition women can have cash money but no business. So my family
moved to the north of Italy where they started to make jewellery. My mother
and my father got married and they built it under the name Gaspari. But we
have knowledge of jewellery for at least 150 years.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] When I have a stone in my hand, it touches my heart, it
touches my eyes, I cannot resist it.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] In the designs, I always attach something of beauty
from the woman. You know jewellery is personality; it is one commodity that
shows the personality of the woman.
I was always in love with the jewellery, since I was a baby. When I was a baby
my mother used to put me in the office behind us, with a bag and I used to

I was only 7 years old.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] It was the dream of my life that my daughter join the
company, but you know children, you can never count on your children.
When I was 21 my mother told me, either you work or we close the factory.
You decide. If you want to work you have to be in Valenza and you have to be
in the factory at 8am, stay there all day, take care of your jewellery, take care
of your customers, take care of everything. So you have to decide what you
want to do.
I though about it, and I thought it would be a pity to throw away a family name
and tradition that has been around for such a long time. My mother created an
empire with our name with her jewellery, so I thought it would be a better idea
to go into the business.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] I have to be exactly, I will tell you, I have to be exactly
on the mood of that country, and especially when I go to visit my big clients or
my agents. When I come back, I take the mood and inflection, the spirit of that
area. Then I am able to create much easier, goods for them.
My mothers’ taste and her customers’ taste are very classical, very consistent
I would say. My customers are more youngish, they prefer modern things that
you can wear everyday.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] Europe has the same taste, but if I have to produce for
South America, if I have to produce for Asia, if I have to produce for Middle
East market, it is completely another spirit. I have to be completely in another
We don’t make a production; we would make maximum 5 or 6 per piece. It is
already for us a very big quantity.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] I don’t believe there can be jewellery without beautiful
women. It is something that really touches the woman. It is something that
confirms to a woman "Oh, he cares so much about me – he is still taking care
of me’. Jewellery is something very small but with very sentimental attachment
to somebody. You cannot give a painting to the woman as a piece of jewellery
– it is totally another world. Jewellery touches a woman. It’s value or size
doesn’t matter. It is something special.
In the old days we only made very important jewellery. When I started to work
here, my girlfriends wanted to buy jewellery from me, so we started to make a
younger line. My mother would not be closed-minded and say, ‘Oh, we do
make anything smaller because we are Gaspari, and our name is only
associated with important jewellery." Instead, she said "O.k., let’s try". We
tried with smaller pieces and now we start from a very small line to a very big
line. Then we started to make watches. That is what makes her very special.
She is not a limited person. She is always open-minded and tries new ideas.
She wants to meet people; she wants to create new things. She never stops.
[Voice Maria Gaspari] Italians are meticulous with artistic things and technical
things. We Italians have art in our blood. This you cannot take this out from
