The Royal Jewellers S03 ep9 : Charles Oudin [Paris]

Interview with Camille & Claire Berthet

Parisian Charles Oudin is a rare character in the world of timepieces. With a long history, the brand today is the true definition of a boutique watch maker. Unassuming, their client list and qualities are nonetheless very impressive. Today they specialise in tasteful jewellery watches made entirely in Paris. You could say that Charles Oudin is more “joaillerie” than “horlogerie”. We had an opportunity to meet with the brand at their Place Vendôme office. Unavailable to the public, the showroom is a private meeting space for the brand’s international client base. Perched in cabinets are the historic clocks and other creations made by Charles Oudin himself. The namesake of the brand was a talented watch maker from the early 19th century who began his career in 1797. Oudin was a student of Abraham-Louis Breguet, who was arguably the most talented and famous historic watch maker of his (and our) time. Anyone who spent time as an apprentice to Breguet quickly gained a reputation themselves.

Charles Oudin was a pupil of Breguet he make a lot of pieces for Breguet for example the question
of time he make also the first clock watch … in France during all the 19th Century he develop the
production with the same taste of Breguet but with a little more decoration.

14.10
I’m creator but I come from a family of watchmakers in the … of Swiss border but on the French

Century.

14.35
During all my activity I have seen a lot of pieces of … and I have seen that it was perhaps the most
interesting brand which gives the taste of the French watchmaker.
14.52

14.59
Once I have sold all my watches to one collector. It was all my stock of antique watches just one
guy buy whole.
15.07

15.15
You are happy to have sold all the pieces but after you say how can I buy the same thing, it’s
impossible because it’s when you sold five pieces, ten pieces you can say Manyana I can have the
same as the five pieces and get again ten pieces again, or 50 pieces again but when you lost
everything, in my mind it was very difficult to buy the same thing because it’s a lot of time to
make the same thing. That’s why I want to start this brand again.

15.51
I have a large collection of Charles Oudin… watches sold at … I want to develop this brand and I
put all the hallmark for this brand.
16.01

16.11
My preferred brand is Breguet. If I see a Breguet, I see it’s ever clean without decoration and
Oudin is the same quality of the Breguet but it’s very different because you have special design on
the back, a special design of the movement, a special design on the dial.
16.29

16.38
C… made all 20th Century he make all the shape of wrist watches like Cartier or B.. or P.. in the
watches which were made during the 19th Century the clients were always the family like the King
of Spain, the King of Portugal the King of England, the King of France, even for the … and also
for the Pope.
17.06

17.15
If you look at the production of C.. Oudin, two pieces are in the Patrick Phillip Museum, the first
one is a self winding watches made for the exhibition in 1806 and it was self winding like the
Breguet watches, there is second one which is very unusual which is a pendant, the movement
move in the case, it’s something very different that you have never seen. And also during the
exhibition at the beginning of the 18th Century he make a watch with a crown.

18.02
It was the first step in technical where to make watches because self winding watches were very
rare at the beginning of 19th Century.
18.12

18.19
It was the pocket watches it does nonsense to have the system on the whole of system which were
used by Breguet or J.. or was a … system.
18.28

18.36
The men watch I am trying to make it’s to make family business.
18.43

18.49
I grew up in the jewellery and watch field. At age 20 my father relaunched C.. Oudin in 1998 and
quite quickly I decided to join while he was launching the brand.

19.14
It’s very difficult to launch a brand with such strong idea and our idea was to make decoration on
the work on the watch, on the case, like if it was a ring. It was in the same direction as the C..
Oudin pieces of the 19th Century which was a lot of decoration.
19.34

19.39
I hid it to put design for art design like the h… on the watch. We were the first when we make that
in 1890 and now it’s a global trend on the watches.
